Repotting, useful information

The repotting it is a necessary procedure to allow plants to develop and grow at their best. Before making a repotting it is good to have all the useful information to prevent the plant from growing as it should or worse drying out. Below are useful information for the repotting of a plant.

Repotting, directions

  • The repotting it must never be done in the period of vegetative rest since the roots are not able to easily penetrate the new compost. Therefore, it is good to wait for spring or summer, considering that for plants that grow little or slowly, the most suitable month is April.
  • Diseased plants should never be moved to another pot as for a plant that is too weak, stress becomes difficult to overcome.
  • The repotting it must be done without removing the original soil, first adding a layer of pebbles to facilitate the stagnation of water and then adding more soil enriched preferably with organic compound.

Repotting, choice of containers
When choosing the vases it is important to make some observations before making repotting.

  • Plastic pots are cheaper and easier to clean but can easily be knocked over by heavier plants. They also keep the soil inside always wet since they are not permeable: this is why plants need less water.
  • The clay pots, on the other hand, are permeable to air and water.
  • Terracotta pots are suitable for large or heavy plants, but they require more work in preparation and during the repotting phase. They are also more fragile and the soil inside dries out more quickly, especially in hot weather: in this case it is advisable to water more frequently, always paying attention to stagnant water.

Repotting, the measure of the vase
In addition to the type of pot, it is necessary to evaluate the right size for a specific plant.
It is good to know that the repotting it should never be done in a much larger pot: too much soil around the roots would risk rotting the plant as it would become damp and muddy.
The choice of the diameter of the vase vase must be made on the basis of specific indications:

  • for a pot with a diameter of less than 10 cm the repotting will be done with an increase of 15 mm;
  • for a pot with a diameter between 10 and 25 cm, repotting should be done with an increase of 25 mm;
  • for a pot with a diameter between 25 and 30 cm, repotting should be done with an increase of 5 cm;
  • for a pot with a diameter greater than 30 repotting should be done with an increase of 7 cm.
  • In the case of plants with fast growth (such as annual ones) it is necessary to double the above measures, to avoid continuous repotting.
