Mold on the walls: all the natural remedies and products needed to permanently solve the mold problem at home.

Mold on the walls, causes

There mold on the walls it occurs in environments where there is the phenomenon of condensation, that is, the formation of water droplets on cold surfaces such as perimeter walls and glass.

To take root and develop, the mold requires four essential conditions at the same time:

  • high temperature inside
  • low temperature outside
  • presence of spores (and these are practically everywhere)
  • low light (in fact it is formed mainly in less lit rooms),
  • humidity (condensation, infiltrations, leaks…).

Between causesmore common than the onset ofmold on the wallsappear bothwrong attitudes, both structural problems.

The habits that affect mold growth concern household management. Wrong ways of heating and ventilation of the house are among the main supporters ofmold.

The bad habits we are talking about relate to insufficient air exchange, damp laundry left to dry inside the house, especially in the cold season, excess water in the plants, saucers that have not been emptied ... these habits do nothing but feed the mold on the walls.

The air exchange allows for an optimal and spontaneous humidity regulation. In winter, when it is cold, we are reluctant to open doors and windows and this only intensifies the "humidity in the house" problem and consequently assists the formation of mold on the walls.

As stated, the causes of its proliferation may also be other: poor insulation, water infiltration or rising damp from the subsoil. Below we will show you some natural remedies for permanently delete there mold on the walls.

Mold on the walls, useful information

Once formed, the mold on the walls must be eliminated carefully, taking care not to neglect even a corner.

It is in fact precisely in the corners and in the various interstices that the fungi nest more often and become more difficult to eliminate.

The walls of the bathroom and kitchen are the ones most at risk of mold: the steam generated by showers, hot baths and cooking food contributes to the formation of stains that usually prefer the corners of the ceilings and then spread like wildfire on the entire wall. In this context it would be advisable to install a fan in the bathroom and leave it on at least 15 minutes after exiting the shower. Alternatively, it is necessary to ventilate the rooms to allow for a natural regulation of humidity which will not be absorbed by the walls.

How to permanently eliminate mold from walls

If the problem is structural, it is necessary to act on the perimeter walls and add an insulating layer. The intervention is less expensive than you can imagine, especially if you act from the inside. The insulating panels can also be installed with DIY but a certain practicality is required in the construction work. The problem is more consistent when mold is caused by rising damp. In this context, the intervention of an expert is a must.

Those who want to plug can use spreadable insulating materials (such asMapelastic, I'll talk about it later) to be applied as if they were a thick layer of paint, this will not be a definitive solution but will allow you to get rid of mold for at least 5 - 6 years.

It is clear that the structural changes must also follow the behavioral changes. Avoid any misbehavior that can raise the degree of humidity in the home.

Mold on the walls, natural remedies

To remove the mold on the walls you can prepare a mixture consisting of two tablespoons of white vinegar and a cup of water: once applied to the part to be treated, it must be left to act for about 15 minutes before rinsing.

In some cases, it is necessary to have a toothbrush to remove all traces of mold, especially in the cracks between one tile and another in the case of the bathroom or kitchen.

If the mold should prove difficult to remove a second treatment must be used (after the one with white vinegar) based on grapefruit seed extract. Grapefruit seed extract can be found in herbalist's shops or organic food stores. For application, simply prepare a mixture of 20 drops of extract dissolved in two cups full of water and pass directly on the mold.

ATTENTION: avoid rubbing cloths or sponges to dab the product as rubbing could create a dispersion of spores that would take root elsewhere. Once the mold it is preferable to paint with special anti-mold paints.

Products to eliminate mold on the walls

In addition to the natural anti-mold treatments described above, we offer you two products to eliminate mold from walls but not before giving you a couple of tips:

- if you do not want to repaint the wall and our treatment was ineffective, we recommend an anti-mold spray product such as Maurer Plus; do not worry, here the expense is minimal: with € 8.90 you can buy a liter of product. This product is specific for the treatment ofmold on the walls,it is based on active chlorine and is able to whiten the wall by removing themoldswith their spores and also the mosses from the walls of the house.

If you intend to paint the wall, rather than buying aanti-mold spray, we advise you to perform the anti-mold treatment described above, then sand thoroughly and paint with a specific paint. If the wall who has problems with mold is in direct contact with a very humid environment (the bathroom or an external wall in contact with the ground) we advise you to pass a layer ofMapelastic (it is true, it is an expensive product but it guarantees excellent insulation from humidity).

For all information on the product, I refer you to the Amazon page: Mapelastic Mapei.

Note that there are different models, in any case it will be necessary to paint on the insulating layer once it has dried. Use the mapelastic "Foundation" if you need to solve the problem of mold on walls near bathtubs, floors… while the tube, smart, acquadefense or classic version are perfect for walls. Personally, I recommend using the classic.

The anti-mold paint we recommend is oneanti-condensation and anti-humidity paintas the Genial Solver anti-mold thermal paint, it is applied on the wall affected by the mold problem (only after washing it and removing the mold) with a brush or roller. The price is 29.90 for 2.5 liters, a quantity suitable for the treatment of 3.5 square meters. If the price may seem high, know that it is a water-based product and above all that it does not contain solvents that are harmful to the health of the inhabitants of the house.

It is free of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and it is not a anti-mold bland because it acts by nullifying the problem of mold at the root (eliminates condensation and humidity). If you live in a very humid environment or the wall to be treated is fragile (such as leaks, or is placed in damp places such as cellar, garage, bathroom ...), we always recommend applying a thin layer of Mapelastic.
