Baseboard heating, what is it
Among the types of heating domestic we find the heating with radiant panels. It is a system made up of coils that transport hot water as a heat carrier or cold water to cool the environment. Coil heating is considered an energy-saving type of heating as it works at low temperatures. The coils that act as a heat carrier can be placed under the floor (we speak of underfloor heating), in the walls (we speak of wall heating) or in the skirting board (we speak of baseboard heating).
In green building, the baseboard heating it is considered an efficient and energy-saving heating system. It is useful because it heats, cools and also helps solve the problem of rising damp inside the apartments.
This type of heating allows the diffusion of heat around the perimeter. From a point of view ofcomfortdomestic, baseboard heating is preferable to wall heating but not tounderfloor heating. The reason? The heat tends to rise from the bottom up and the thermal energy released from the walls tends to accumulate towards the ceiling. This phenomenon is mitigated when thermal energy is emitted from the lower parts of the room.
How baseboard heating works
The operation of the baseboard heating is easy to understand. Inside the simple baseboard, copper pipes or coils are installed in metal parts, thus allowing radiation towards the walls of the rooms: hot water at low temperature flows inside these micro pipes / coils.
It is possible to adjust the temperature of each room as desired, since the baseboard heating systems can also be autonomous: during operation there are no movements of air and dust, allowing the heat emitted to remain uniform for the entire set time .
Its eco-sustainability increases if its operation is connected to a system of solar panels and a solar thermal system for the production of domestic hot water.
Baseboard heating, advantages and disadvantages
Baseboard heating involves an improvement in the quality of the perceived heat, as it becomes enveloping, since it involves the whole environment: this aspect is fundamental, in fact the heat reaches our body evenly at every height, which instead does not happens with classic air conditioners or with radial panel heating placed in the wall.
Another interesting aspect is the simplicity of installation and the more accessible installation costs compared to the underfloor heating system.
It is efficient enough to be used as the only source of heating inside the house, replacing the classic radiators.
Again, among the advantages of baseboard heating systems, there is the ability to solve the problem of humidity in the walls: this system allows the walls to completely dry from excess moisture in the rooms, while managing to maintain a correct level of humidity inside them.
Do not underestimate the fact that they can be used in those environments where there is not enough space to insert a fireplace or radiators.
The only downside to this heating system is the fact that they must be placed in an appropriate manner so as not to hinder the effective functionality of the thermal skirting board. What does it mean? That you will have to pay attention to the arrangement of furniture, wardrobes and furnishing accessories. Between pros and cons, this is what is most felt because the user will have to use the perimeter of the house more carefully and, if necessary, sacrifice wardrobes or other furnishing accessories which, leaning against the heat source, would compromise its efficiency.
Baseboard or floor heating
We have already said that the underfloor heating system is to be preferred from a point of viewcomfortbecause it allows you to deliver heat from the lowest part of the room (the floor!).
On the other hand, the expected costs for installing an underfloor heating system are higher because the user will not only have to break the pre-existing floor but also redo the baseboards and, if necessary, slightly raise the level. of the fixtures.
The installation of a baseboard heating system is relatively simpler: it does not damage the flooring and, with excellent dexterity, it may also be possible to recover the old baseboards.
