Insulating thermal coat: when is it more convenient?

The insulating thermal coat to improve the energy efficiency of a building, it is always an economically demanding intervention. However, there are occasions when the convenience is greater because by isolating the casing it is possible to optimize other 'necessary' interventions such as maintenance. Let's see what are the moments in which the evaluation of a thermal coat it becomes more convenient.

The boiler is over 15 years old. Maybe it is still in good condition, but if the heat generator has exceeded this age it certainly needs an overhaul to verify its proper functioning and efficiency. The regulation systems and circulation pumps may also be obsolete.

If this is the situation, before intervening on the boiler or replacing it, it may be convenient to evaluate the hypothesis of thermal coat insulating. With an energy diagnosis, you may find that by isolating the casing, a smaller boiler that consumes less may suffice.

We pass from diesel to gas with replacement of the boiler. This intervention, even more than the previous one, is an excellent opportunity to consider a insulating coat. In these cases it is not uncommon for the energy diagnosis to reveal that the generator power can be reduced by 50% with an isolated casing, with significant savings on the purchase of the new generator and on future consumption.

Extraordinary maintenance of the facade or roof is foreseen. In this case the fixed costs (erection of scaffolding and scaffolding) are already in the budget and the additional costs of a thermal coat only concern the application of the insulating material. Maintenance interventions such as plastering or whitewashing are an excellent opportunity to energetically redevelop the building.

In winter, the internal temperature is above 22 ° C and the other floors lack comfort. In a situation of this type, regardless of other interventions that make it cheaper, the insulating thermal coat must be taken into serious consideration and, if this is not possible, also internal thermal insulation. Keep in mind that a higher temperature than the optimal one (usually around 20 ° C) leads to an increase in energy consumption estimated at 7% per year for each degree of difference. A high and uneven internal temperature is an indication of poor insulation of the envelope (the energy diagnosis will confirm this) and does not contribute to living well-being.

The building was built before 1976. If this is the situation and if extraordinary maintenance interventions have never been carried out in the following years that have involved the insulation of the external walls and the roof, it is very likely that the energy quality of the building is poor. In fact, before 1976 there were no laws that required the thermal verification of buildings. Also in this case, regardless of the rest, the insulating thermal coat.

The next step will be the choice of the insulation solution, in which it will have to be taken into account that the thermal coat it affects living comfort in different ways and consequently a breathable thermal coat is preferred. The ecological characteristics and the energy balance of the materials are also an appreciable evaluation criterion.
