How to use the dishwasher in order to consume as little electricity as possible? The ideal would be to feed the dishwasher directly with hot water from the gas water heater. With some devices it is possible and it is a decidedly convenient solution because electricity is saved and washing times are reduced. However, the water heater must be powered by gas (otherwise it would not make sense) and positioned close enough to the dishwasher, i.e. without long connecting pipes that would make the system uneconomical overall.
How to use the dishwasher: descaling. The consumption of electricity and the proper functioning of the dishwasher also depend on the hardness of the water. It is for this reason that all models are equipped with a descaling system called 'softener' which reduces the hardness of the water and prevents limescale from settling on the heating elements, increasing the consumption of electricity.
The softener works by adding salt (prefer the specific one to table salt) and the harder the water, the more the dishwasher will require. Not all dishwasher models report a lack of salt, so be careful. However, you soon realize it because washing without descaling, in addition to damaging the dishwasher, does not give good results and the dishes come out dull. It may be useful to know the degree of hardness of the water in the municipality where you live (also useful for other reasons), which you can do on the Assocasa-Federchimica website (at the bottom of this article you will find the link).
How to use the dishwasher: the rules of use. For the dishwasher use only specific detergents, taking care that they are ecological. And respect the recommended doses, if anything less but not more: a higher dose of detergent does not wash more but pollutes more. The tablet detergent is more practical than the powder one (even if it is not dosable) and you can prepare yourself some decidedly ecological do-it-yourself dishwasher tablets (in this case you will decide the doses based on the size).
In order not to waste detergent, electricity and save water, the dishwasher should only be operated at full load (because if it is placed empty it does not consume less) and with the 'eco' program at low temperature if the dishes are lightly soiled. If there are few dishes, it is advisable to use the quick cold wash, which allows you to eliminate bad odors and complete the load at a later time for a complete wash.
The intensive cycle is to be used as little as possible and only when the dishes are particularly dirty; the washing time is long, the water temperature is very high and the energy consumption is high. On the other hand, final drying with hot air can be done peacefully without. To dry the dishes, simply circulate the air at the end of the wash by opening the door: the washing time is shortened by at least 15 minutes and approximately 45% energy is saved.
