How to graft a rose, hints

  • Graft type indicated for rose:scudetto graft
  • Best time to graft the rose:
-from May to June with scudetto grafting with vegetating bud
    - in September with a dormant bud scudetto graft

How is the scudetto graft on the squad done
1) T-shaped engraving
With a grafting knife like the one shown in the photo above, perform on the bark of the grafted rose bush, about 10 cm from the ground, a T-shaped incision of 2 cm wide by 3 cm long. With the tip of the knife, lift the bark very gently.
2) Prepare the branch
From a branch of the year, taken from the chosen variety and at least 8 mm in diameter, remove the leaf from a bud, leaving a portion of the petiole of about 1 cm in length.
3) Remove the gem
Disinfect the grafting knife with alcohol and then use it to remove the bud from the branch of the chosen variety. To remove the gem, first make an incision 2 cm above the gem and a second incision 2 cm below the gem. Start with the small knife from the upper incision and slide it to the lower incision so as to cause the detachment of the gem which will have the shape of onescudetto.
4) The mastic
Prepare the shield in the best possible way by removing the fibrous part stuck behind. Spread the grafting putty behind the shield as described in the next paragraph. Brush a bit of mastic also in the T cut of the rootstock.
5) Insert the shield
Insert the shield in the T incision. The upper part of the shield protruding from the bark of the T incision must be cut. Apply a bit of putty again at the cut level.
6) Secure the shield
Using raffia, fix the shield leaving the gem uncovered. If after about 15 days the petiole of the leaf houses, the graft has taken root. The raffia will be removed after at least three months.

Mastic for grafts to promote engraftment
There are several products on the market to facilitate the rooting of a grafting. In the case ofscudetto graft of the rose, we recommend the use of a ready-to-use mastic for graftsto spread or brush on the incisions; in this way, there will be more chances that a small stem will develop from the bud that will be led in growth so that it forms a new shrub. The putty shown in the photo consists of an elastic resin mixed with healing substances to be applied directly at the time ofscudetto graft.
