Indoor pollution: what solutions to adopt

Although popular beliefs seem to say otherwise, there are no inherently polluted products; however, some of them, if used incorrectly, can alter, even irreversibly, the physico-chemical characteristics of the habitat, proving to be harmful to both the health of humans and the environment.

L'air pollution represents one of the serious environmental problems of our century. Two types of pollution are recognized: outdoor and indoordepending on whether the damaged environments are located in open spaces or homes, offices, industries, commercial businesses and all those places in general where indoor activities are carried out are affected. Pollution caused by anthropogenic origins and natural ones, existing in open spaces, is defined as outdoor; what concerns homes, public and private offices, industries, cinemas, bars and all those places where indoor activities take place is called indoor. Unfortunately, in Italy there is no real legislation on air control in closed environments!

What are the main factors of pollution of our homes?
The main sources of indoor pollution are: tobacco smoke, gas stoves, wood-burning ovens and fireplaces, Kerosene heating, household cleaning and maintenance products (solvents and detergents), building materials (the presence of adhesives and solvents for setting should not be underestimated in work of coatings), insulators, but also the emission of harmful substances by electronic instruments such as printers and plotters.

As far as our homes are concerned, it can be decided whether the air that circulates inside them can be purified or not in favor of environmental, domestic and individual sustainability. In this regard, many plants come to our aid; in addition to their ornamental function, they have benefits such as absorbing and reducing domestic pollution in a natural way. They are capable of filtering the air, eliminating many of the poisons present such as cigarette smoke, carbon monoxide that is released when fireplaces and gas stoves are lit.

The substances to be eliminated caused by indoor pollution are: formaldehyde, present for example in many household furniture, trichlorethylene, used for solvents, paints and dry cleaning, and benzene found in fuels, in smoke, in many plastics and detergents. Among the plants capable of capturing the chemicals in the air and absorbing them we find the dracena, the potos, the gerbera, the ficus, the aloe, the anthurium and the spatafillo.
